Women and sustainable development in Africa: an international forum for a major continental challenge

As part of World Women's Day, the Sanofi Espoir Foundation is supporting the International Forum "Women and Sustainable Development in Africa", which is taking place in Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania) from March 8 to 10, 2018.

Women and sustainable development in Africa: an international forum for a major continental challenge

Organized by the Network of African Academies of Science (NASAC), this forum on "Women and Sustainable Development in Africa" aims to provide scientists with a opportunity for dialogue and advice on the importance of the role of women and their inclusion in national frameworks that work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals for Africa.

Over three days, more than 50 African and international speakers (from academies, governments, media, NGOs, experts, foundations and major companies) will debate on economic, scientific, demographic and health issues, with the aim of drafting The Dar Es Salaam Declaration: an African scientific and societal roadmap.

By supporting the necessary promotion of women, the scientific community can and must contribute to accelerating the social, economic, cultural, scientific and technological progress of the African continent.

Throughout the world, sustainable and effective development requires the participation of the entire population, especially women. In Africa, which has experienced a growing positive economy for more than ten years, women's empowerment is crucial in shaping societies as they move towards gender equality, and the capacity to choose family size, education and child health. Moreover, the economic vitality of each country can only be strengthened and maintained by virtue of environmentally friendly development - water, energy, food and health.

This event is also supported by the Académie des Sciences (France), the Academy of Sciences of Tanzania, the Agence Française de Développement, the IRD and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
